What's Next: Nate Krooks

What would we do without technology? Could you live without your cell phone (except banner, who just got one)? Living without a computer is barely living. Also without technology, how could we keep in touch/look up/stalk/hit up people who we haven't seen in years/don't want anything to do with/how did they find me/you like Nomak too? So with things like friendster, myspace, facebook we can do all that and then some. So that's how I came across someone, who I think I once knew...but it's all based on a picture (above). If it is her, we used to go to school together and threw it down on the activist tip fairly well. Quite the soulful sista. One thing that always struck me were her paintings. So I'm looking for new music and a buddy of mine from the Bay tells me to check out this group Nate Krooks on myspace. I do and low and behold I like 'em a lot. Just solid soulful hip-hop. Not only that but it seems that all the art work, not sure about the production, is done by someone who I think I know. Hit me up, if it's you. And keeping making dope music.

Karina Pasian could be next. Quincy Jones and Russell Simmons think so. With "16 At War", I think so too.

It's a definite must see for art appreciators, such as myself. This video is also a mind blowing experience when under the influence of miss maryjane.

Mass Appeal

It's been a minute since I've been hyped on a new artist, so when I first started to hear the buzz around Estelle, I took it all with a grain of salt and kept my expectations low. I really should've known better though, because when the props are coming from such sources as soul-sides, you know that the sh*t is real and Estelle lives up to the accolades and then some. Although most of you probably have heard the infectious Will.i.am-produced "American Boy" or one of its many remixes, I've really been feeling the reggae-suffused "Come Over" and the between-the-sheets grooves of "You Are." It's amazing how effortlessly Estelle flits between pop, hip hop, R&B, and reggae, and how versatile her voice is. With the smoothness of Sade and the charm and attitude of Lauryn., Estelle delivers an album with wide appeal that still retains it's authenticity. Now go cop it.

Just Kidding Around

As I was looking through some of my music library, the kind you read for our new sidebars (Seeing Sounds - our favorite music related films & Top Shelf - our favorite literature related to music), I noticed one of my favorite books was Kid Koala's Nufonia Must Fall. When I first read and heard it, I thought it was wonderfully ambitious and that reminded me of an episode of The Invisbl Skratch Piklz's Turntable TV's. I love the beat that he's scratching over.

Week Old News: The Pharcyde Reunion

If you like your hip hop news a week old, then you know that Get Down is the place to be. I came across some interesting news about one of my all-time favorites, Pharcyde on Metal Lungies the other day, and wanted to share the news: the Pharcyde (yes, ALL of imanibootybrownfatliptheslimkid3) just might be getting back together. While I'm a bit skeptical of reunions (remember how well it went for the Fugees?), I'm a little more optimistic of this one because the Pharcyde crew just doesn't seem filled with the oversized egos that always tends to get in the way of these attempts. When Fatlip and Slimkid3 did their solo albums, neither blew up, and maybe that's a good thing because it only takes one crazy diva to break up a group and any further prospects of a reunion.

What's most convincing is that they agree that the air's been cleared and the time is right - I don't get the sense they're just desperate and trying to cash in on the name recognition they have left. As most of you have heard, they're also headlining Rock the Bells in one of the most insane hip hop lineups I've ever seen. But most of all, I want to believe they can make it happen, because to me they're hip hop at it's best and I never caught their act live before they broke up back when. So here's to hoping that the cyde can make this happen and to more stories about gettin' with transvestites and falling in love with your teacher.

The Love Movement (People Be Gettin' Married!)

It seems like everyone I know is taking the plunge and getting married. I guess we are at that age now and here I am blogging away, watching life pass me by...IT'S A CELEBRATION so we decided to throw together a little playlist of jams to celebrate that occasion. You're not obligated to use any of them, but it's just some of the tracks we would use to set the mood right. But y'all (especially MPB) are obligated to do better than the folks above...BATTLE!!!

Pay Close Attention

Debstar here. Yes, it's been a LONG ASS TIME since I posted. Don't rush me all at once.

Pay close attention cuz HOPIE SPITSHARD is about to drop some knowledge on yo ass on what it means to have the "hustle down to a fuckin science." Law student by day and emcee all day everyday, Hopie Spitshard is a unique voice in the rap game - spitting lyrics with her chin up, unapologetic and honest about her identity and womanhood. It makes you pause and smile - like damn I'm proud to have a sister like her reppin on the MIC! Her beats, produced by 6Fingers, blends a Bay Area flavor with head-nodding beats that is unmistakably HER. She is a veteran to the Bay Area music scene as an emcee in The Wrong Hands, opening for the likes of Casual from Hiero, and being featured in the EyeASage & Mama Clothing mixtape "Married to the Hustle."

Her new album, The Diamond Dame, drops this July. Make no mistake - it's full of her signature style - a lyrical yet hard delivery and rhymes that don't make you question twice whether this girl is in this game to stay. Add her at www.myspace.com/hopiespitshard.

Peep these exclusive tracks off The Diamond Dame and spread the looove...

Rule #4080: Who's Killin' Hip-Hop Now

We here at Getdownnn pride ourselves on bringing you the dopeness in music in general, but with our main focus being on our first love: Hip-Hop. Like Deion Sanders once said describing the difference between playing football and baseball was for him, "Football is my wife and baseball is my mistress. I will always love football to the nth degree with my soul. It's my base, my core, my everything...but every once and a while I like to mess around with baseball." For us it could be said that Hip-Hop just hits our soul here at Getdownnn, especially growing up on it, it's just the root of us, the core...but every once and a while we like to mess around with other "genres" of music. With all this being said, sometimes even your wife cheats on you and it seems like more and more Hip-Hop is just giving it up too damn easily. There are still great moments in the relationship, so I won't go as far as Nas and say Hip-Hop Is Dead, but these moments are far and few between. These Rule #4080 posts will be dedicated to a love loss. The watch dog is watching you in pain.
